Babies in Prison

CNN just covered a story about a California womens prison which is about to introduce a new program that will allow women in prison to keep their newborn babies in a special facility will they will learn parenting skills and receive drug treatment.

"Just because were in here doesn’t mean were bad mothers,” Lucinda Hernandez

Uh, Wrong! That is exactly what it means. This is outrageous, the babies need to be stripped from these unfit mothers. These babies should be either placed with family or put up for adoption. The mothers must first kick their drug habits and get out of jail before they are allowed the chance to raise their children.

Hey Roy,

Interesting topic!

I think one could make the argument that not all mothers in prison are bad. I think it would depend on the crime. 1st degree felonies like assault, murder, etc would definately put one on the "bad mother" list. But lesser crimes, like tax evasion would not.

I think the question needs to be rephrased though. Regardless of whether or not the mother is a "good mother" or "bad mother", is prison really a healthy environment in which to raise a child. I would think not.

I think if a parent does not consider the consequences of their actions then by default they are bad parents. By this I mean, if they do not consider that they will be put in jail and therefore seperated from their child then they are selfish and bad parents. They might have some good parenting skills but they place selfish desires ahead of their childrens well being.
